Associate urban designer and urban planner


Main tasks and responsibilities

  • Supporting the Urban Design Center project
  • Produce project work, such as creating maps, renderings, drawings and graphics
  • Write and design planning reports; help develop Corridors of Opportunity playbooks
  • Participate and prepare community engagement meetings and experiences for most projects
  • Participate in site creation projects, from design to construction
  • Assist historic districts with special projects as needed
  • Provide design advice for city capital projects
  • Work with Planning Design and Development and other departments on major initiatives involving urban design (e.g. Corridors of Opportunity, CATS Silver Line, Strategic Mobility Plan, Charlotte Future implementation 2040, etc)

Knowledge, skills and abilities

  • Demonstrated knowledge of urban design principles and practices and their applicability to the community
  • Ability to write about urban planning and design principles and to explain these principles graphically
  • Experience working with teams on design and/or planning projects
  • Ability to present and work with diverse audiences and all segments of the city’s population.
  • In-depth skills in all Adobe Suite products, ArcGIS and SketchUp, as well as Microsoft Word.

Preferred qualifications

  • Master’s degree in urban planning, architecture, geography, landscape architecture, engineering, political science, public administration, social sciences or related field
  • AICP or other professional certifications related to planning

Minimum qualifications

  • Four-year degree in planning, architecture, geography, landscape architecture, engineering, political science, public administration, social science or related field
  • One (1) year or more of urban design experience in multiple practice areas (including urban design, public space planning, placemaking, policy planning and implementation)
  • An equivalent combination of education and relevant experience that provides the knowledge, skills and abilities necessary to successfully perform the essential functions of the position
