General idea

  • The Scaling Up Nutrition Business Network (SBN) Project Manager will have overall leadership responsibility, including the design, development, implementation and management of all GAIN Nigeria projects under the SBN program.
  • SBN is one of four global networks within the Scaling Up Nutrition (SUN) Movement that supports 61 countries, including Nigeria, to develop a multi-stakeholder approach to nutrition. The ambition of SBN Nigeria is to increase the availability and affordability of safe and nutritious food in Nigeria through:
    • Gather and organize business around national nutrition priorities
    • Assess the challenges and opportunities faced by businesses to scale up their actions and investments in nutrition and facilitate partnerships at national and global levels to support national businesses
    • Improve the enabling environment to incentivize business to take action on nutrition, by fostering strong linkages and partnerships for SBN Nigeria with SUN civil society, donor and UN networks, as well as with the Government of Nigeria
  • The Global Alliance for Improved Nutrition (GAIN), United Nations World Food Program (WFP) co-organizes SBN globally. GAIN Nigeria hosts the SBN Nigeria Secretariat and works closely with the SUN Government Focal Point and other SUN Networks in Nigeria.
  • The SBN Nigeria Project Manager will be supported with tools and guidance by the SBN Global team.
  • The SBN Project Manager will be directly responsible for implementing all related workflows, including financial management.
  • Reporting to the Deputy Country Director, the SBN Project Manager will work closely with the Global Head and SBN teams, Senior Director Finance and Administration, Project Managers from other countries, Technical Specialists, knowledge leadership (KL) teams and support staff to achieve high levels. the quality and effectiveness of the program at the national level through evidence-based work and to ensure compliance.
  • This position is part of the Nigeria Program Leadership Group (PMG) and the post holder is responsible for ensuring the efficiency and effectiveness of the organization by participating in decision-making, advising on strategic programmatic areas and issues, supporting the communication and implementation of agreed decisions.

Duties and Responsibilities
Program/project management:

  • As SBN Project Manager, manage the SBN program currently consisting of a number of projects, act as the lead GAIN representative in strategic and technical meetings/workshops regarding SBN.
  • As head of the Project Management QUAD, ensure operational, financial and knowledge leadership strengths are well represented at GAIN at all levels
  • Implement the SBN program in partnership with key stakeholders – government/regulators, private sector, development partners and consumers
  • Lead and support budgeting processes including monitoring and forecasting, support the GAIN team in resource mobilization and setting strategic direction, ensure timely submission of program reports as agreed with donors and other stakeholders.
  • Keep abreast of changes in the operating environment, synthesize ideas and implications, and share them with others in GAIN as appropriate.
  • Deploy SBN surveys on finance, technical assistance and business development to assess the needs of SBN members – and identify new partnerships to address the challenges and opportunities facing businesses in Nigeria to scale up their actions or their investments in nutrition.
  • Work with the SBN Global team and Deputy Country Director of GAIN Nigeria and PMG members to develop an SBN Nigeria fundraising strategy post 2022.
  • Lead the implementation of the SBN Nigeria program, aligning activities with the SBN logic model and results framework and, where appropriate, using national SBN tools.

Stakeholder management:

  • Build a network of relevant local and global experts and provide content and communications support to the global SBN team by sharing and adopting best practices by liaising with other national SBNs, particularly in Africa.
  • Lead SBN Nigeria’s ambition to increase the availability and affordability of safe and nutritious food in Nigeria, by bringing together and organizing businesses around national nutrition priorities, contributing to monitoring and evaluation and to the subsequent dissemination of the results of SBN projects to ensure the achievement of outputs and outcomes.
  • Assess the challenges and opportunities faced by businesses to scale up their actions and investments in nutrition and facilitate partnerships at national and global levels to support national businesses
  • Improve the enabling environment to incentivize business to take action on nutrition, by fostering strong linkages and partnerships for SBN Nigeria with SUN civil society, donor and UN networks, as well as with the Government of Nigeria
  • Organize technical and political level meetings between business, government, civil society, donors and UN agencies to strengthen cross-sectoral dialogue on nutrition and build consensus on priorities and opportunities for business and nutrition in the country.
  • Recruit national companies to SBN and use the National SBN Membership Database for SBN Nigeria and support the roll out of SBN Nigeria pitch competitions.
  • Other activities as may be assigned by the Deputy Country Director of GAIN and the Global Head of SBN.

Team management:

  • Supervise and manage program staff (e.g. associate) by providing direction, feedback and feedback
  • Work within the GAIN country office and global teams, fostering and supporting a positive organizational culture

Key Organizational Relationships

  • Reports to the Deputy Country Director, Nigeria with dotted lines to the SBN Global Coordinator/Head.
  • Works with other GAIN Nigeria programs and operations including Enhancing Access to Safe and Nutritious Foods (ENSAND), Scaling Up Nutrition in Priority Staple Foods (SNIPS), Evidence and action towards safe and nutritious food (EatSafe), support to the Federal Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development (FMARD), GAIN country operations, etc.
  • Liaises as required with GAIN’s global SBN team and QUAD project management mechanism.
  • Liaises with local partners, SUN Business Network members and stakeholders to ensure optimal project implementation.
  • Liaises with consultants and experts providing technical assistance to the project.
  • Liaises with partners, donors and other stakeholders to safeguard GAIN’s external reputation and to support resource mobilization.

level of studies

  • Minimum of a Master’s degree in social sciences, international development, business management, public health, nutrition, international relations or related fields or equivalent work experience.


  • Substantial work experience in the development and management of international development projects and programs (experience in nutrition or related fields would be an advantage)
  • Experience in strategy development, advocacy, communications and documentation of best practices
  • Proven track record and results in managing private sector related development projects in Nigeria.
  • Experienced partnership broker and/or negotiation skills with the private sector
  • Proven track record in identifying and supporting SMEs, including women-led and women-owned businesses, to increase private sector investment in nutrition
  • Excellent relationship management and familiarity with managing a large stakeholder platform
  • Experience in communication and advocacy with the private sector
  • Track record of successful fundraising from multilateral, private and corporate donors
  • Experience delivering on-the-job and formal training to various partners as well as managing workshops and other public events
  • Experience in staff management and development.
