Hayes Theater Marketing Co-Head

Hayes Theater Co develops and produces some of Australia’s most exciting musical theatre. Over eight exciting years, the company has developed a reputation for highly entertaining musicals of exceptional quality, where new Australian writing sits alongside bold new productions of Broadway and Westend hits.

We are looking for an enthusiastic and committed Marketing Manager – a new role – to join our team and drive marketing activity during a period of considerable growth for the business. The Chief Marketing Officer holds a leadership position with responsibility for developing and implementing Hayes’ marketing and brand strategies.

1. Research, develop and implement marketing strategies to promote the company and individual productions to maximize box office receipts and philanthropic income.

  • Create the company’s annual marketing plan.
  • Manage the deployment of campaigns and ensure the company’s compliance with the marketing calendar and deadlines.
  • Manage the project to create exceptional marketing materials.
  • Direct communications with the public via the company’s marketing automation platform (MailChimp).
  • In collaboration with the General Manager, manage the company’s marketing budget.
  • Advice on advertising spend and the best ways to promote productions.
  • Oversee the design and delivery of all publications, including annual reports, seasonal brochures, programs, posters and digital resources.
  • Work with the CEO to develop fundraising guarantees and facilitate communication with donors.
  • Generate content by writing texts for campaigns and designing materials if necessary. Most of our graphics are created externally, but simple design projects are done internally, usually by the marketing associate.
  • Help maintain relationships with key external stakeholders.
  • Ensure Hayes events and activities are documented and recorded, maintain our digital archives.
  • Make sure Hayes uses the latest technologies and platforms to maximize the effectiveness of our communications.

2. Develop awareness and understanding of the Hayes brand.

  • In conjunction with the Hayes CEO and Board of Directors, participate in the review and refresh of the Hayes brand.
  • Maintain company website. The responsibility is shared with the reception manager.
  • Develop brand policies and guidelines to ensure consistent communications.
  • Attract and retain a new and diverse audience for Hayes.
  • Engage with the local community, other arts organizations and associations to raise awareness of Hayes.

3. In collaboration with the Front of House Manager, use our CRM system (ENTA) and analyze ticketing data to increase the effectiveness of direct marketing.

  • Ensure that the company database is maintained appropriately and all necessary data is entered.
  • Use existing data to shape marketing activities.
  • Set up Power BI reports (ENTA feature) to provide insight into ticketing trends for the CEO and Board.
  • Analyze and report on the effectiveness of campaigns.
  • Keep abreast of changing trends in marketing and communications, new technologies and media consumption and use.


  • The Director of Marketing reports to the General Manager and works with the Hayes Communications Committee to achieve our marketing and audience development goals.
  • Manage the Marketing Associate, who is responsible for social media, content creation and event promotion.
  • Liaise with the Communications Committee, a sub-committee of the Board of Directors.
  • Work with the Executive Director and independent producers to facilitate the promotion of independent productions presented at Hayes.
  • Liaise with external marketing agencies/vendors, photographers, publicists and designers.
  • Liaise with cast and creatives to facilitate the promotion of Hayes musicals through social media and advertising.

Selection criteria

  • 3-5 years of recent full-time experience in a marketing role, preferably in the arts.
  • Exceptional communication and writing expertise, with a demonstrated track record of creating marketing copy with a strong audience and client-focused approach.
  • Excellent verbal and interpersonal communication skills.
  • Experience in developing and implementing strategic marketing plans, including audience development strategies.
  • Understanding of Facebook Business Manager and Google Analytics.
  • Proven ability to develop art marketing materials in a range of digital and print formats.
  • The ability to deliver clear briefs and provide creative direction to ensure materials align with the production’s creative vision.
  • Demonstrated experience using customer databases and information to create datareasoned decisions and shape marketing strategy and activity. Knowledge of ENTA preferred.
  • A passion for the performing arts and musical comedy.
  • Excellent digital skills and strong computer acumen.
  • Solid knowledge and experience of digital marketing, including established and emerging social media platforms.
  • Ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously.
  • Proven ability to deliver complex projects on time and within budget.
  • Great attention to detail.
  • A willingness to take on ad hoc tasks and new tasks as needed.

Ordinary hours and compensatory time

The position is full time 38 hours per week. Occasional after-hours and weekend work is required. Compensatory time is provided for significant overtime.

The Marketing Director will work from Hayes’ office at 32 Orwell Street in Potts Point. Flexible working arrangements are possible, including working from home one day a week.
