Partner / Senior Urban Designer


About the role

BDP has the opportunity for an experienced urban designer to join our urban planning group in the North of England, working from our studios in Manchester, Sheffield, Birmingham, Leeds and Liverpool. Your main studio base would be either Leeds or Manchester, but other BDP North studio locations may be considered for the right candidate.

This is a key appointment to support the wider urban planning team (comprising urban planners, landscape architects and urban designers) and will suit someone with established experience of working and delivering projects planning and regeneration in the UK.

You will also work closely with BDP architects, engineers and other consultants who work with BDP to deliver our orders for public and private sector clients.

About you

You will ideally have a specific qualification in urban design, although applicants qualified in urban planning, architecture or landscape architecture may also be considered, provided you can demonstrate strong skills in urban design.

You will have relevant experience, technical skills, leadership qualities and be a confident networker, with a strong focus on business development and job success.

Working within the Urbanism team, you will contribute to a wide range of urban design solutions; from single sites to entire neighbourhoods, in existing and proposed urban areas, across the UK. There may also be opportunities to work on urban design projects outside the UK, working with BDP’s international network of design studios.

Responsibilities and Duties

General

  • Support the urban design team and the wider urban planning team
  • Work closely with other professions
  • Have knowledge and overview of the complete design and delivery process, recognizing the need for deliverable design solutions and high quality end products
  • Keep up to date with developments in the industry
  • Have a keen interest in urban development, design and planning

Technical

  • Work closely with planners, architects, landscape architects and engineers, especially in the early stages of the project, continually seeking creative and innovative urban design solutions, ensuring that the company adds to its reputation excellence in creating places for people
  • Have the skills to convert conceptual ideas into developed master plan proposals within the context of financial and program parameters
  • Maintain and develop exceptional skills in proper visualization techniques
  • Be comfortable with AutoCAD and Revit, with good 3D skills and proficiency in all Adobe Creative Suite programs
  • Be able to produce high quality written documents and project reports

Qualifications and experience

The position requires a university level qualification in urban design, planning, architecture or landscape architecture. You have relevant experience, preferably in a commercial organization.

Typical aspects of the experience should include:

  • Urban design analysis
  • Urban design frameworks and master plans, covering a range of development scales and land uses
  • Preparation of regeneration strategies for neighborhoods, towns and cities
  • Production of urban design guides, codes and policies
  • Stakeholder and community engagement in urban design

  • Well-developed graphic skills
  • Ability to work under pressure while monitoring objectives and communicating with the team
  • An ability to work in a multidisciplinary team environment and a flexible approach
  • Good communication skills with the ability to articulate and present ideas both verbally and in writing
  • Strong networking and clientele skills, with the ability to secure new work
