Feldhusen was the school’s senior building automation systems manager for Interdisciplinary Science and Technology Building 4 (ISTB4) on the Tempe campus of Arizona State University and was responsible for the day-to-day operations of the complex office system. and building laboratories.
“He was our building whisperer,” said Professor Ramon Arrowsmith, the school’s deputy director of operations. “With his constant attention to detail and problem-solving orientation, he was uniquely qualified to manage our building. “
In 2020, when ASU Facilities Management approved a hire to meet the ISTB4 building needs, the building management team immediately reached out to Feldhusen due to his unique skills and previous experience with the building.
“Unlike all the other buildings on the ASU campus, the ISTB4 has a NASA-approved precision research infrastructure for building space flight equipment,” said Chris Skiba, who was the immediate supervisor. de Feldhusen and the director of the school’s research infrastructure. “The types of labs and clean rooms at ISTB4 require a sophisticated manual and computerized system that Bruce was adept at managing. “
In fact, Feldhusen’s skills in cleanroom management became so essential that he was made an official member of the space mission by Professor Regents Philip Christensen, who directs the instruments of the OSIRIS-Rex, Lucy and Europa Clipper missions. from NASA.
“Bruce was extremely proud to be a part of the School of Earth and Space Exploration,” Skiba said. “He was particularly honored when Professor Christensen asked him to sign his name on team plaques representing the people who worked on these space missions. I will never forget his smile when he felt like part of the team.

Caring for the ISTB4 was a passion in itself for Feldhusen, but he was also a master motorcycle mechanic. He could completely dismantle a motorcycle and rebuild it without a manual, YouTube, or Google. He loved to travel the country on a motorbike and his dream was to one day tour the Alps by bike.
“And if you weren’t feeling right, he was also a trained Reiki healer,” Skiba said. “Bruce was not just an amazing colleague, he was a true friend.”
