This Designer Won Coachella With Her Fantastic Looks

For this year’s Coachella, LaMaar had her signature vibrancy — replete with references — to her Coachella looks. There were Y2K-style sparkles, which came in the form of a baby pink trucker hat by Angi Atelier; classic raver paraphernalia, like stacks of beaded wristbands (mixed with his VIP band); and LaMaar’s love of futurism, via a pair of Chloé snowboard goggles that extend from ear to ear. Always exploring, LaMaar notes that this year at Coachella, he was “looking for the new,” he says. “The reason we came to the festival this year was to absorb what was happening in the culture instead of being fabulous with the artist passes where you drink champagne and watch everything on a screen. this was a case study to see what happens after the pandemic.

When dressing, LaMaar has a simple mantra. “Give ’em what they came for,” a term an older New York MTA bus driver once told her in her early twenties. “I was nervously expressing how out of place I felt coming from the Bronx,” they say. “That moment on the bus stays with me every time I get dressed, and it’s the formula for using my playful sense of style to merge floating worlds.”

Last weekend, LaMaar pulled references from It girls, anime, and even the early 2000s Easter Bunny. “I see these places as public stages to show off my form of storytelling,” they say. “Challenging everyone casually to discover your own balance of style.” Here, see how LaMaar became the most stylish and outrageous person at Coachella.
