Pereira was 40/1 available for the job immediately after Rafa Benitez was sacked.
But he is now the 3/10 favorite – overtaking previous favorites Frank Lampard and Wayne Rooney.
Reports claim that Pereira is Farhad Moshiri’s preferred choice and has gone through two interviews for the vacancy with owner and business associate Alisher Usmanov.
Pereira impressed Moshiri and the board last week with his innovative plans and unique coaching style.
The Guardian claims that Pereira, 53, could be offered a contract that includes a break clause if relegation occurs.
Pereira was in the frame to replace Roberto Martinez in 2013 and again in 2019 when Marco Silva was dismissed.
And Moshiri’s close ties to super agent Kia Joorabchian could rock the deal in the coming days.
But the prospect of Pereira’s arrival has not gone down well with some supporters.
Images have emerged online of graffiti in Goodison Park, which reads: ‘Pereira out, Lampard in’.
The 27-year-old campaign also demonstrated outside the Royal Liver Building where the club’s offices are located.
Everton are in desperate need of a transformation with the club stuck in 16th and four points above the relegation zone.
The loss to Aston Villa with caretaker boss Duncan Ferguson in charge forced the Toffees to their third straight league defeat.
The Merseyside side have now won ONCE in their last 14 top-flight games and taken five points from a possible 39.
Pereira won the Portuguese league twice with Porto and won the Greek title with Olympiakos.
However, he was kicked off by Fenerbahce last December after less than six months and couldn’t save 1860 Munich from relegation before moving to China.
Former Chelsea boss Lampard is still under consideration and is available at odds of 4/1.
Wayne Rooney then follows at 6/1 with Ferguson shooting 9/1 to retain the role for at least another nine matches.
