Who is new SC Deputy Judge Rodil Zalameda?

New Supreme Court Associate Justice Rodil Zalameda Graduates from Ateneo Law School
MANILA, Philippines – Court of Appeal (CA) Judge Rodil Zalameda is the new Associate Justice of the Supreme Court (SC).
He will replace newly retired judge Mariano del Castillo.
Zalameda was chosen by President Rodrigo Duterte over 5 other nominees who have been shortlisted on several occasions, including court administrator Midas Marqez and judge CA Japar Dimaampao.
He himself had never been shortlisted for an SC post before the July 12 shortlist for Del Castillo jobon the basis of the documents available from the Judiciary and Bar website.
Who is Zalameda?
Zalameda was born on August 2, 1963 and is expected to retire in August 2033.
He was appointed associate judge at the Court of Appeals of September 2008. Before joining the Court of Appeals, he served as the city prosecutor of Mandaluyong City.
According to this CA profileZalameda was a product of the public school system during his primary and secondary education.
He completed his undergraduate degree at Eastern University, after which he went to Ateneo Law School for his law degree. There he worked as associate editor of the Ateneo Law Journal.
Zalameda won his law degree in 1987 and passed the bar exams in 1988.
He is part of the Fraternal Order of Utopia in the Ateneo which counts former SC chief judge Renato Corona and associate judges Andres Reyes Jr and Alexander Gesmundo as alumni, among others.
Notable cases

In 2015 he drafted the board’s decision which rejected the plea of Tanduay Distillers Incorporated, which was found liable for unfair competition and infringement for using the trademark “Ginebra Kapitan” of Ginebra San Miguel Incorporated.
More recently, Zalameda was part of the 11th special division of the CA which seesaw on the issue of the payment of lawyers’ fees – including the ousted Chief Justice Maria Lourdes Sereno – hired by the government for the Piatco case.
The decision, which said the hiring of foreign and local lawyers was “irregular, unnecessary, excessive, extravagant and impermissible”, was published in June 2018. – Rappler.com
